Single-stream comingled recycling has widely been viewed by municipalities and waste haulers as the most effective system for high volume collection of recyclables.  However, the cost savings on the collection side often result in lower material quality and higher processing costs down the road.

The Container Recycling Institute will host a free webinar on May 24 to discuss the merits of alternative methods of collection and why single-stream may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

Presenters will include Clarissa Morawski of CM Consulting who has conducted extensive research on beverage container collection and is author of CRI’s publication Understanding Economic and Environmental Impacts of Single-Stream Collection Systems.  Clarissa will be joined by Andy Bond of 4R Environmental who recently released a study titled Procurement Outcomes for Waste Collection Systems in the UK.  Both presenters have tested current assumptions regarding single-stream’s cost effectiveness when looking at the entire recycling process and will share their results.

Single-stream was developed as a way to reduce high collection costs but in the process has undermined processors’ ability to deliver quality material to manufacturers.  Join us on May 24 to learn what factors have lead to single-stream’s popularity but why sorted recycling wins out over single-stream in terms of overall cost effectiveness, quality of material collected and landfill diversion.
