CONSUMER GOODS: Bottled water sales continue to soar
Sales of carbonated drinks remained relatively flat between 1997 and 2005, while sales of noncarbonated drinks, including bottled water, almost tripled, according to The Container Recycling Institute.
Plastic water bottles produced for U.S. consumption take 1.5 million barrels of oil per year, according to a 2007 resolution passed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. That much energy could power 250,000 homes or fuel 100,000 cars for a year, according to the resolution.
According to the International Bottled Water Association, the sale of total gallons of bottled water has increased to 8.8 billion in 2007 as compared to 2.2 billion in 1990.
